Lilongwe, 9 October 2016: Hundreds of urban music lovers flocked to Amazon Club in the capital Lilongwe to witness the unveiling of UMP Awards nominations which took place on Saturday night, 8 October.

This year, the highly anticipated locally produced UMP Awards will see Hip Hop heavyweights Gwamba and Tay Grin going head to head as they have bagged four nominations each.

Despite getting nominations in other different categories, the two rappers are battling it out in the “Best Song of the year” category where Gwamba’s “Better” is up against Tay Grin’s “Chipapapa”.

They will also trade jabs in “Artist of the year” and “Best Hip Hop artist” categories.

Newcomers JJC, Purple C and Ril B have three nominations each while the critically acclaimed female artist of the moment Zani challe got two nominations.

Singer Theo Thomson bagged three nominations whereas veteran rapper Phyzix has bounced back with a bang having being nominated for “Best Hip Hop artist” and “Album of the year” for “Captain Long John”.

The nominations voting commenced on Monday 19 September 2016 and concluded on Monday 3 October 2016, with the objective of selecting five nominees per category.

Producers then later included the Best Female Act, which makes the number of categories in the 2016 UMP Awards rise to 12 from the initial 11.

The public sent SMS texts to designated numbers on Airtel and TNM mobile networks (0994299099 and 0880549556): 1 SMS / 1 Category Vote. The judges and the public votes were weighed and they contributed 50:50 of the final selection.

UMP has lined up a few side events including the just ended UMP Awards Nomination Party, a DJ showdown slated for Friday, 4th November, UMP Fashion Night and Media Awards at Game Underground Car Park and the icing on the cake which is the UMP Awards on Sunday, 6th November at the BAT Ground.

Rap beef escalates to violence

Rap beef between Blantyre outfit Trap Squad and Lilongwe rivals Soul Rebel Entertainment artists has escalated to violence.

A brawl ensured at UMP festival on Sunday but no one was injured.

The scrimmage took place backstage and was instigated by Third Eye when he approached Revolver talking sh*t about being ready.

Revolver was occupied with a fan and ignored him.

Then Gwamba showed up but he didn’t say anything.

Suddenly, two goons approached Revolver to confront him and a war of words ensured before getting physical.

Mibawa production crew handy in breaking up the two before it got worse however the altercation ensured yet again on twitter.

Gwamba bragged about how he smashed Revolver but rapper and media practitioner Slessor who was on site when this took place dismissed the said allegations.

Gwamba tweeted “Never let none of these p*ssies fool u. This is just twitter. Ask @revolvermw what happened”.

Gwamba later on removed the tweet but it was enough to get twitter users reactions.

In response Revolver tweeted “Gwamba if you gonn send some guy to f*ck me up, atleast get somebody that can fight. Your goon didnt do nun other than hug me”.

And then Slessor joined the twitter conversation “Sendin dudes 2do ur dirty work”.

“Revolver was not beaten. I was there. Dude and his friend Mandela sent dudes but all there was pushing. No one got hurt”.

“Dont talk gangster on twitter when u dont have the balls to confront your opponent”.

TS and SRE artists are bitter rivals and were booked to perform at the same event.

Various quotas had raised concerns prior to the show that a fight might take place  when the two rivals meet at one place following growing resentment towards each other.

Prince Chikweba, a media personality said “Last week I asked the UMP guys to make sure the security was tight at the event because it was too obvious zoti ena amenyana/might”

Recently Krazie G dissed Revolver and Chavura in Dalis’ new single “Wallet”.

A situation which led to Dali got dragged into the beef for letting “Wallet” out when he and Revolver are home boys.

In the run up to Sundays event, Gwamba sent subliminal shots on twitter saying he was coming to Blantyre to perform and sort out a “small problem”

Gwamba tweeted “All this bullshit ends tomorrow

When Revolver got wind of it he fired back “F*ck subtweeting, ticheza mawa ngati mukutifuna. And i’ll be in 25 next weekend, we can take it there”

Meanwhile after the incident occurred at the B.A.T grounds, Revolver and his Trapsquad family told organisers that they were leaving the grounds to avoid going hysterical and turnish image of a good show.

Nde’feyo announces UMP Awards 2015 nominees

Nde’feyo Entertainment has announced nominees for the 2015 Urban Music Party (UMP) Awards to take place on 8th November at the BAT Ground in Blantyre city.

The Awards are part of the 2015 UMP Festival, a celebration of urban music and culture in Malawi.

There are five categories including Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Video of the Year, Producer of the Year and Best New Artist.

According to a statement sent to this reporter, each category has four nominees who were shortlisted by a panel of judges namely James Gumbwa, Rex Chalenga and Kimpho Loka, with the involvement of the public at particular stages.

“Just as the general public was involved in the nomination process, fans have also been asked to suggest which artists and/or content they would want to win via the UMP Facebook Page the votes will be used by the panel to decide the winner in each category to be announced on the afternoon of Sunday, 8 November 2015 at the UMP Festival,” reads the statement in part.

UMP Awards 2015 also have a special category namely Lifetime Achievers, which will be given to the late Mafunyeta and Criminal A.

The 4th UMP Festival will feature star-studded performers Chimzy Kelly from Zambia, as guest-artist, and Malawi’s own Gwamba, Nepman, Diktator, Fredokiss, Piksy, Sangie, BarryOne, Bucci, Blakjak, Home Grown African, Sonye, Martse, Janta, Mafo, Trap Squad, Young Kay, Tech Dali and Daredevilz.

The show will also feature special acts including spoken word, a dance showdown and an MC battle. Winners of these two competitions will receive K50, 000 cash prizes.

Fans to nominate UMP Awards contenders

Nde’feyo Entertainment has announced that the general public will be involved in selecting the nominees for the forthcoming UMP Awards scheduled to take place on 8th November at BAT Ground in Blantyre.

The awards are part of the 2015 Urban Music Party (UMP), a celebration of urban music and culture in the country, organized by Nde’feyo Entertainment.

According to a statement made available to Mana, for the first time, UMP will be having music awards and the categories include Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Video of the Year, Producer of the Year, Best New Artist and Lifetime Achievement.

“The public will suggest the entrants, but a panel of three judges; media and industry players Panther Rix, Rex Chalenga and Kimpho Loka will be at the discretion of coming up with the ultimate winners.

“For the meantime, fans can suggest the nominees via Twitter using artist or content name with the hashtag #UMP2015 (for example “ABC for #UMP2015 Awards”). Other nomination platforms will be announced in the next few days,” reads the statement in part.

Two Lifetime Achievement awardees will be selected by the judges and organizing committee based on their accomplishments.

In the first four categories, nominations are open to artists and content considered to have entertained Malawi and kept the urban music industry ticking between the months of October 2014 and August 2015.

Ndefeyo Entertainment has announced that the fourth Urban Music Party (UMP) will be held on November 8, 2015 at BAT grounds in Blantyre with a Pre Party slated for November 7, 2015.

According to a press statement made available to Malawi News Agency, International guest artist Chimzy Kelly, who is famed for his hit records “Dorika” “Mwanakazi Ndikumbuyo” recently won Zambia’s Musical Awards Song of the year, will perform at the festival.

20 urban artists, nominated by their fans through UMP festival Facebook portal will also perform and shine at the festival.

In the statement, UMP Project Manager Wisdom Phanga said the aim of this year’s festival is to promote positive lifestyle among the youth.

“Ndefeyo regards the youth as its core audience of urban music and arts consequently UMP festival mission is to promote and celebrate urban creative industry” Phanga said.

The festival will honour two lifetime achievers. There will also be an award for Artist of the year.

Other categories include Song of the year, Video of the year and Radio Deejay of the year. In addition there will be dancing and freestyle competition.

UMP Festival started in 2009 with festivities taking place at Green Bamboo Park, Chancellor College in 2011 and French Cultural Centre in 2013.
