Lilongwe, 23 August 2015, Mana: Entertainment Company Soul Rebel Ltd has announced the launch of an Open Mic event dubbed Rediyo Mic Club in partnership with Airtel Malawi as part of promotional activities introducing soon-to-be launched, music-sharing mobile application ‘REDIYO’.
Jointly owned by Hip Hop artists Gwamba and Third Eye, Soul Rebel Ltd manages recording artists and also runs project such as the application, events and entrepreneurship programmes aimed at supporting Malawian youth.
REDIYO, powered entirely by Malawian based companies is set to commence operations later this year and is deemed to be Malawi’s most innovative solution to music piracy in the country.
In an email sent to this reporter on Sunday, Soul Rebel Ltd Co-owner Mandela ‘Third Eye’ Mwanza said Rediyo Mic club will commence with its first event to be held at Alexanders Pub in Lilongwe on Saturday 29th August 2015.
“Competitors are being shortlisted by way of internal application processes. Sixteen contestants are expected to participate and a winner will be selected in elimination rounds process as voted by the audience. The event therefore aims at both promoting the application and creating a platform for young aspiring musicians to showcase their talent,” reads the email in part.
Speaking on the same development, Soul Rebel CEO Duncan ‘Gwamba’ Zgambo said: “In a way we are killing two birds with one very efficient stone by both promoting the application which will be a game-changer to the music industry, but also providing opportunities that artists like myself never got when we were aspiring to become what we are. We want to show Malawi that there is room for growth in the arts industry and there is enough for all of us to share. It starts with us.”
The event will kick off at 2:00 pm and will run till 11:00 pm on the day. And is expected to run monthly, with one winner in the Mic Club competition receiving K100,000 cash prize every month except in the December finals where the winner will receive K1,000,000 and one winner in the FIFA 15 tournament winning K50,000 monthly and K500,000 in December.
Entry to the event is K2,000 for gentlemen and K1,000 for ladies with 50% discounts on Airtel Money payments. Guest appearances from Sagonjah and Third Eye are expected to spice up the show. Other activities to take place at the event include Carlsberg Beer Towers, DJs and braii.
The event will be hosted by MBC TV’s Touching Base Host, Rex.
