Lilongwe, March 18: South Africa based chess sponsor, Tiwone Mdina, has spread an air of enthusiasm into the atmosphere of local players of the mental sport after cashing in K 1 million for the 2015 Mdina National Tournament.
In an interview with Malawi News Agency, Mdina disclosed that dates of the tournament games, which will be played at Victoria Hotel, will be decided by Southern Region Chess League (SRCL) executive committee into whose bank account the cheque has been deposited.
“I chose SRCL this year because their strategic plans for this year are in alignment with our objectives,” he explained further adding; “and it seems they have a structured approach to chess development and their efficiency in communication is excellent”.
The celebrated chess aficionado also hinted that the net for more sponsorship had started widening disclosing that other potential sponsors have started growing interest in the game.
“I managed to convince some two sponsors to join the band wagon one of whom has confirmed but requested to join Mdina for this year so that he can learn the trade before he goes solo,” said Mdina disclosing his co-sponsor as Wezi Chipeta.
Wishing the tournament organisers success, the Malawian born and bred Mdina urged SRCL to be “really need to take it seriously because organizing a tournament of such magnitude is not a child’s play, but a mammoth task and I will always be there to support them during the buildup of the tourney.”
Mdina, who also grew up playing chess, says “As a young player, I did not get enough support from older and experienced players and there were also not many competitions that I would participate in.
“Thus as a player of a” minor sport”, I felt marginalized and unappreciated and it would break my heart to see current upcoming players to experience the same challenges.”
