Mchinji: Mchinji District Council has disclosed that the stadium which is being constructed in the district will be ready by June 2015.
The District Council Chairman Kennedy Chipanga said this on Monday after a public hearing organized by Malawi Economic Justice Network (MEJIN) in the district.
He told Mana that his council is working hard towards the completion of the stadium which has caused serious concerns amongst people in the district because of poor progress.
He said the stadium has the potential to generate more funds which could be used in other development projects in the district.
“Our dream to have the stadium here (in Mchinji) is still on, it will not just improve football activities but also be a source of revenue in our district. That is why we need it as soon as possible, we are in talks with the contractor to resume the work so that by June this year our stadium should be ready,” said Chipanga.
Director of Finance for Mchinji district council Andrew Mhango confirmed the development saying the stadium has been allocated K15 million in the current district development budget.
He said the council has already invested K13 million from local development fund (LDF) on the project and hopes to source more funds elsewhere to complete the stadium.
“The stadium is one of our priorities from development point of view, we have spared 15 million kwacha strictly for the stadium project and we also hope to get more funds from Germany,” he said.
The district DOF then said the project has been neglected since 2010 in previous district development budget due to inadequate funds.
